Whom We Help

image
Widow of a Family Member
“Words fail me on how to express how appreciative I am for your assistance… financially and emotionally.”
Her husband was prominent in Family governance in the 1980s before business required them to relocate out of the country. His death left his wife left penniless, in debt, unable to find employment and in dire need. The Trust funded her basic necessities and found her housing and work with a San Francisco religious order. Now, she is largely self-sufficient on social security but has occasional need for support with unexpected health costs.

A Member of The Family
“This is the hardest letter I've ever had to write. It is embarrassing to be in this position...”
"I have a liquidity crisis and find myself in a position of not knowing how I'll get through the next two months. The Foundation payment would assure that I would be able to purchase my medications and pay my mortgage for several months."
A long-time, active member faced a series of health issues which consumed most of his assets and business income. A series of major surgeries and unreimbursed medications required the Foundation to step in to help.

A Member of The Family
"After suffering a congestive heart condition, and the loss of half my business, I am burdened with some medical expenses...”
"I cannot remember when my finances seemed to be so bleak. Words cannot express my gratitude."
Foundation support enabled him to stay afloat until his ultimate passing and, in fact, the Foundation identified a person to administer his affairs, whom he eventually chose to serve as executor of his estate.

Little Sisters of the Poor
“Your gift will certainly go a long way to help us provide our elderly with many essentials of daily living.”
The Little Sisters of the Poor at St. Anne’s Home was contacted by then-Chairman Eph Engleman and they agreed to take in our grant recipient. She continues to provide administrative assistance to the order and is largely independent except for occasional medical care.

A Family Employee
“It is a very humbling experience of the help we have received from our many friends and people we have never met. Thank you is not enough.”
A long-time staff member lost his primary job because his Good Samaritan act [for which he was trained and qualified] was deemed to violate his company's rules. His wife could not work because of impending surgery. The Foundation provided temporary financial assistance during the time it took to find reemployment.
image
Former Family Member
“The past financial support has made a big difference...”
"Enabling us to meet challenging financial obligations connected with his care and giving us some peace of mind as well."
A former member's spinal injury led to paraplegia. In addition to paying his uncovered medical costs, the Foundation provided him with a specially-equipped van to enable his mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is The Family Foundation Charitable Trust related to The Family?
A: The FFCT is a separate entity from The Family. The FFCT is an IRS-registered 501 (c)3 philanthropic organization to which contributions are tax deductible.

Q: Are there restrictions on how FFCT funds are used?
A: Yes. Funds must be used to meet financial needs for basic living—food, housing, medical, transportation, counseling, etc. We do not subsidize business losses or activities beyond sustenance.

Q: How do you verify the need and use of funds?
A: Each request or recommended need is assigned to an FFCT trustee who serves as case manager. The case manager qualifies the individual’s needs and financial resources to determine the severity of the overall situation, whether the needs satisfy the requirements of the FFCT and to determine if additional assistance from other sources may be required such as housing needs or financial planning.

Q: Can I designate a specific recipient to receive financial assistance?
A: No. However, we welcome information about a needy case that may qualify for assistance from the FFCT.

Your Financial Contribution.
Making a Difference.

Since its founding in 1984, the Family Foundation Charitable Trust has helped dozens of individuals with grants to assist those faced with life challenges for which they were not prepared.

The Family Foundation Charitable Trust was established by 6 members of The Family to provide assistance to members, their immediate families and club employees. The Foundation also supports local charitable organizations. These organizations serve our member communities and are fully vetted by the board of trustees. Together we help those in our community who are in crisis due to health issues or because they have suffered financial setbacks and can no longer provide for their basic needs without assistance.

From its beginnings the Trust has provided financial assistance. In recent years, our mission has grown to include a “financial tool kit” approach. We identify independent resources to provide financial consulting services, legal, medical and housing assistance to grant recipients.
